Series 100 + Spare Parts and New Roles for Spare Parts

I began Series 100 in 2002 and worked on it extensively for 2 years. It began as a way to ignore composition. The project title is Series 100 + Spare Parts. The title reflects my self-imposed task of manufacturing 100 pieces with additional pieces labeled as spare parts. The work is process-oriented; each piece is painted with watercolors or gouache, cut, labeled with a part number, (my initials followed by the date production was completed) and has white tabs enabling it to be pinned to the wall in a specimen-like manner. I approached this series as though I were working on a factory assembly line manufacturing a vocabulary of abstract signs and shapes. The individual shapes or parts also have the potential to be linked with an infinite number of others, creating some sort of super-shape or event.  Through this, I began exploring notions of chaos and order, flux and control. Presently there are over 200 individual parts that have been catalogued.
