When California went into lockdown, I set about trying to make sense of the imposed order and the ensuing chaos of life during quarantine. Black Lives Matter, death counts, environmental disasters, and politics filled the news. I began documenting the minutiae of daily life with an even greater attention to detail. The works in American Sampler: A Field Guide to 2020 are from a body of works on paper and photographs I made in response to the ‘new normal’ and epic moments that have acted as catalysts for social change during the 2020 Pandemic.
