Anthems and Bunkers

In July and August of 2004, I lived in and worked in The Netherlands as part of the artist residency program. George W. Bush was president and threatening to use of Weapons of Mass Destruction as the justification for the 2003 invasion of Iraq. I was self-conscious about being an American overseas, but I wanted to familiarize myself with the city and began walking. All these fabulous sales were going on. 50% off everything. This piece was a confessional, like the idea of airing my dirty laundry which in this case was my American consumerism.

The work was influenced by the increasingly blurred boundaries between art and design; the intertwining of commerce and culture; the war against terrorism, and our response to issues of security, both real and manufactured.
